Robot archaeologists: taking the risks out of underwater fieldwork
Social Sciences (Cultural studies)
Euronews Knowledge
Date of upload:
16.10.2015
Co-author:
Caption:
Underwater archaeology is an exciting, but "sometimes risky field": http://www.newarchaeology.com/divedangers/ of studies. To eliminate those risks a European research project, "ARROWS": http://www.arrowsproject.eu, is working to develop robots that help humans in dangerous environments. Made by euronews, the most watched news channel in Europe.

Fluid flow from a hose under gravity
Engineering (Mechanical engineering)
Claas Bierwisch
Date of upload:
12.10.2015
Co-author:
C. Dehning, T. Kraft
Caption:
The movie shows a fluid in a rigid pipe which is connected to a hose of rubber-like material. A piston moves towards the left through the pipe thereby pushing the fluid out of the hose. Gravity is accelerating the fluid downwards. The faster the piston moves the more the fluid streams towards the left instead of downwards.

Die filling of a seal disc cavity
Engineering (Mechanical engineering)
Claas Bierwisch
Date of upload:
14.04.2015
Co-author:
T. Kraft, H. Riedel, M. Moseler
Caption:
Dry pressing and subsequent sintering in order to shape metallic or ceramic powders is characterized by its high dimensional accuracy. The homogeneous filling of the die prior to compaction is an important prerequisite for maintaining the dimensional accuracy because spatial density variations during compaction can lead to undesirable distortion during the sintering. Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations allow to model the die filling process in detail and to predict the resulting powder density distribution. Various optimization approaches for a homogeneous density can be analyzed in the simulation. The simulation was carried out using SimPARTIX.

Distortion of a complex shaped thin ceramic film during sintering on a rigid substrate simulated by Discrete Element Method
Engineering (Mechanical engineering)
Tobias Rasp
Date of upload:
21.05.2015
Co-author:
Caption:
Particle-based simulations using the discrete element method were applied for the sintering of thin ceramic films that are constrained by a rigid substrate. The inhibition of lateral particle movement in vicinity of the substrate leads to a preferred shrinkage direction perpendicular to the substrate, which causes shape distortion as well as delamination of the film at the interface edges. The amount of particle rearrangement and the height to width aspect ratio of the cross-section are factors that determine the level of shape distortion and edge delamination.
