Caption
The movie shows a detailed three-dimensional surface model of a human tooth. The tooth is rotating around its central vertical axis. During the rotation, a stream of size-distributed particles with constant initial velocity hits the surface of the tooth which resembles a dental polishing process.
Further information
A wear model is used to calculate the cleaning effect on the tooth due to the particle impacts. The color coding refers to the wear depth (blue means no wear and red means maximum wear). The model on the right is the same as on the left but without the particle stream being displayed. The result is obtained from a simulation using the discrete element method (DEM) software SimPARTIX.
